“Why can’t I get in?” Sarah Shepherdson asked the prison guard. “You let that that big-shot superhero Puritan in.” “He’s a big-shot superhero,” the warder said. “You’re some kind of street-trash. Are you another of Messenger’s hookers?” “He’s not like that. Sure he’s a few stamps short of a full parcel delivery but he would never rape and murder that girl like that. Really. Never.” “Move on, sister. He’s not allowed any more visitors.” Sarah moved on. The prison was pretty tough to crack, but she looked up at the walls figuring how an Improbability Dancer could get in. “Thinking of a little federal crime?” Dancer swung round. “Xander? What are you doing here?” “Advising you to go home,” the mage said. “You can’t help Messenger. You mustn’t get involved.” Sarah looked up at the black prison walls. “But he’s all alone in there. I mean sure, he’s got hundreds of prisoners going to want to kill him, but he’s all alone. And he probably thinks that nobody in the whole world cares for him. That’s just not fair.” “Who said life was fair? You trust me, don’t you Sarah?” “Yeah,” Shep said. “I suppose I do. You helped me get my Probability Dancing powers in the first place.” “Then trust me now. Go home. Don’t play any part in this. Messenger will get out and get what’s due to him. I promise.” “But…” “Go. Home.” “Will you be seeing him?” “Eventually I expect to.” “Will you tell him he’s not alone? That he’s not completely unloved? Please?” “I’ll make a point of letting him know the absolute truth at the appropriate time. Now go.” Sarah Shepherdson went off and caught the bus back to Parodiopolis, biting back the tears she felt when she thought about the Messenger. Mr Lucifer dropped his Xander disguise and chuckled to himself all the way home.
