Why Captain America is an Avenger 1. Because he is a Tolkein fan from childhood (as established around Avengers #46 - although Lord of the Rings wouldn't have been published until Steve had already picked up the shield). Cap has therefore always enthused about a band of comrades from many different backgrounds banding together to fulfil a quest. 2. Because he has been subject to the most intense military training of any superhero, and knows the value of the unit, of teamwork, and of the organisation. Cap is a natural team person, and tends to form them wherever he goes whether he means to or not (from the Invaders to Jack Flagg and American Dream). Cap is also a natural leader, and therefore needs somebody to lead. 3. Because when he came out of his iceburg Cap was very much adrift in a much-changed society, and the Avengers gave him somewhere to hide and lots of familiar fighting for him to keep his mind off his situation. 4. Because Cap is very generous by nature, and knows that he is needed in the team. In some early issues of the Avengers, #47 for example, Cap chafes against the way the Avengers make a personal life away from the team impossible. Almost four hundred issues later on Cap's still there, and still with no personal life worth speaking of. 5. Because inside bold confident Captain America is timid, bullied Steve Rogers, who had no friends as a child and who very much loves his friends as a grown-up. 6. Because it is the Right Thing to do. Thoughts, anyone?
"When bad men combine, the good must associate; else they will fall, one by one, an unpitied sacrifice in a contemptible struggle."
