Follies of Youth: Chapter The Missing – “Al B. Harper – teen science geek.”

Note: This chapter takes place somewhere in between the beginning of the tale and before HH’s Chapter 13 “The Time of Our Life” (which was Al B.’s previous first appearance in the story).

Al B. awoke in the bed in his room in his cabin in the woods north of Gothametropolis-York.

“Whoa!” He said, to no one in particular, “I’ve got the worst headache.”

Stumbling out of his bed he made his way out the door and into the main room which served as both his living area come laboratory.

“What the F^&#!” He exclaimed, looking around at all the experiments and gizmos. “Did Christmas come early this year or what?”

Half an hour later he had still only managed to make it less than a third of the way across the room, as he was drawn to each experiment and gizmo by the insatiable urge to discover more about them.

“Man, this is too keen! Who ever set all this up sure knew his or her stuff. There’s science happening here that’s decades ahead of, well, known science.”

Suddenly, he felt something cold and sharp against the back of his neck.

“Yes,” said a woman’s voice, “the one that set all this up does know his stuff…and you’d better tell me who you are and what you’re doing here if you don’t want to become dead stuff yourself.”

Al B. felt the sharp cold thing on the back of his neck get somewhat sharper…

“I’m Al B. Harper.” He quickly said. “As for what I’m doing here, I live here with my Gran…”

Suddenly, he was turned around and shoved on the ground by his assailant.

“Al B.?” The woman asked “What happened to you? You haven’t been experimenting with age reducing cream have you?”

“Huh?” Al B. looked up to see a woman with purple hair dressed all in black leather holding a katana sword in her hand. “Cool…” he said. “Err…do I know you?”

Yuki Shiro helped the young science geek back to his feet. “We’re old friends.” She answered. Her internal computer processed the data being sent to it from her finger tips as they grasped his hands. “Hmm…it looks like you’re now sixteen years old exactly.” She looked at him somewhat puzzled.

“It’s my birthday today.” Al B. explained.

“No it isn’t.” Yuki said.

“Yes, it is…you’d think I’d know my own birthday.” He rolled his eyes.

“Oh really?” Yuki queried. “Then when is your birthday?”

“February 11.” He said.

“Mmm,” Yuki nodded, “and what date does that desk calendar say it is?”

“…October 23….” He turned back to Yuki. “You changed that earlier to confuse me didn’t you? Look lady, what the h*llfire is going on here?” Suddenly he turned back to the calendar. “…why does that calendar say 2004?”

“Because that’s what year it is.” She threw him some science magazines that were on the table next to her. “Check the date on these, on the video over there, on that newspaper…it’s 2004 Al.” She walked over to the mantle above the fireplace and grabbed a photo. “This is the Al B. Harper I know.”

Al B. looked at the older version of himself in the photo, then at his current younger reflection in the shiny surface of some scientific looking contraption on the table next to him. He noted his own hair twisted tightly into African-plaits and the faint stubble under his chin compared to the older photo version’s full goatee beard and somewhat dyed blond at the front non-plaited do, the fuller face, the lines forming around the eyes.

He looked back to Yuki “There’s only one scientific explanation for this” he said. “Time Travel!”

“Come-on,” said Yuki picking up the helmet that she had placed on the table earlier, “I’ll give you a lift into the city on my bike, I’m sure your friends in the LL will be able to sort this out.”

She flicked back her long purple hair in that way that sexy women do so well.

“Sweet!” said 16 year old Al B.
