A Most Unusual Visit It was just short of dawn when Sir Mumphrey Wilton woke. Not because he had enough sleep, or even because of a sound. There was a presence in his room, something years of experience and caution left him sensitive to. When he first opened his eyes, he saw nothing but furniture and shadows. But then, as he sat up, one of the shadows moved. "Who goes there?" Mumph demanded. "I warn you, I'm trained in all manner of self defense." "I commend you," a female voice replied. "However I am not here to harm you." The shadow stood slowly and moved a lamp next to the window and suddenly switched it on. It was a short Asian woman Mumphrey recognized as an assassin named Keiko - and the fact that he knew her calmed him yet left him feeling uncertain. "I apologize for waking you. I was going to wait patiently until you woke, but it seems you noticed my presence a bit earlier." "Been up and down all night," Mumph told her. "so if you don't mind, get to the point and quickly." "I'm sorry for taking your time," she whispered. She paused, and then added, "To get to the point, someone called...Nats...asked me to convince you not to leave." She frowned. "He...implied that it was urgent. I naturally assumed you were leaving...now...so I agreed to talk to you." He laughed. "Just like the chap to turn a wagon into a runaway train, what?" "What?" Keiko asked, her eyes narrowed with uncertainty. "Right, what?" Mumphrey repeated. Keiko shook her head. "I'm sorry, sometimes your odd speech confuses me." "Odd?" Mumphrey raised an eyebrow. "I speak the Queen's English, right and proper." "Back to Nats," Keiko forcibly changed the topic back, "He claimed you were about to leave the Lair Legion. I assumed he meant--" She indicated the building around her. "--you were moving out of the Lair Mansion." "No such thing, I assure you," Mumphrey responded. "He meant to refer to my plan to step aside when Fin Fang Foom resumes his duties, I'd wager." "That's it?" Keiko seemed irritated now at having travelled at such a late hour for something so trivial. "Nats is upset because you won't play leader any more?" "Suppose you'll be on your way, then," Mumphrey said. "Switch off the light on your way, what?" Keiko stopped herself this time before echoing that last dangling word, which upset her once again. "Maybe he does have a point. He mentioned something about being afraid of getting fired again." "Once again, quick to the point if you please?" "I think he doesn't like the old leadership. He pins his future hopes on you. And if I may say--" She leaned back against the table by the window. "--if one is dissatisfied there are likely more." "Mmm." Mumphrey sat up now, listening intently in spite of his bleary eyes. "Perhaps you don't see yourself as leader. I can't even suggest that you're an ideal leader, since I'm not even a member of this organization and don't wish to be. However I can see that you are the glue." "Pardon?" Mumph asked. "The glue," Keiko said. "You bring and keep everything together." She finally reached over to the lamp and switched it off. "Just a thought," she whispered... ...and then silence filled the room once again. Mumphrey strained to see if any of the shadows were moving, but everything in the room was static once again. His visitor was long gone. |
