It was early in the morning and Sir Mumphrey was seated at his desk in his office, spending some time just relaxing with his pipe, the morning paper, and a cup of tea. He sat back and thought over the past few days.

They had been uneventful for the most part, but something troubled him. Various members of the Lair Legion had approached him about his staying on as a member of the team, in fact to stay as their leader. While it was an honor to be considered more than just a temporary addition, he felt that, even as much as he might like to remain, it just wouldn’t be cricket to take Fin Fan Foom’s place as he had agreed to fill in only until the return of the Makluan. He almost dreaded facing the team today, as he was sure that he would be bombarded by more of the same. Hopefully he’d be wearing his trousers for the rest, he thought.

Just then a knock at the door interrupted his thoughts. “Come in,” he called out.

“Good morning, Sir Mumphrey,” said Hatman as he poked his head through the door. Mumphrey noted with approval that he had removed his trademark H cap; the Capped Crusader knew how much Mumph hated it when he wore it inside, so they had come to the compromise that in the office the hat stayed off. He was glad to see Hatman honoring that.

“And a good morning to you as well, Mr. Boaz,” replied Mumphrey. “And what can I do for you?”

“Well, I was talking with CrazySugarFreakBoy! and Trickshot and wanted to ask you something,” began Hatman. Mumphrey sighed and promptly, but politely, interrupted.

“While I’m flattered, Mr. Boaz, regardless of what Mr. Bastion told you, my decision stands and I will be stepping down once Mr. Dean returns, what?” said Sir Mumphrey, looking to avoid the conversation he’d been having all to often lately.

    “Fair enough,” replied Hatman.

Sir Mumphrey was somewhat taken aback. “You don’t see fit to try and change my mind?”

“It’s your decision, Sir Mumphrey. And Finny’s. I was just wondering if you were done with the paper. Tricky said you had it,” said Hat with a smile.

“Oh, well yes, of course, all yours my boy,” stammered Mumphrey as he gathered the paper together and handed it to the Capped Crusader.

“Thanks Sir Mumphrey,” called Hatman as he left the room. Just as he was about to close the door he poked his head back in. “I’ll talk to everyone and tell them to lay off if you like,” he offered.

“No, no, a good leader must be open to the suggestions of his followers and offer an open ear, what? Wouldn’t be proper to tell them they cannot see me if they so desire. Wouldn’t be very sporting of me, now would it?” Mumph said with a slight smile.

“No, it wouldn’t. Liked that part about the good leader,” said Hat as he left the room.

Mumphrey sat in his chair for a moment before he realized what the Capped Crusader was implying. "Oik,” he muttered good-naturedly under his breath as he reached for his tea.
